Project Location: Tadong, Gangtok District, Sikkim
Project Architect: Lhendup W. Bhutia
Status: Proposal
Growing aspirants in the medical field in Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences situated very close to the capital city of Sikkim created a demand for an extended ‘Barrier-Free’ Academic Block & Recreational Center catering to the current lack of space & the future prospects of the esteemed institute. Proposed structures are planned in order to create a loop around the existing Academic Block to maintain the connection between all the components on site. Proposed academic block includes all the facilities that have been taken out to accommodate newer facilities demanding a lot of built-up space, but the challenge is to avoid creating massive massing and hence fragmented solid void form is employed. Stepped common space leads to additional entry of the block. DOuble & triple height spaces reduce visual massing. Sports Block on the other hand is visually fragmented by generating a play in levels of roofs. Material & color palette is kept in harmony with the existing blocks on site. Additional surface & multi-level parking spaces are also proposed close to the existing as well as the proposed structures to enhance the ease of movement. Intermediate green spaces for common use of public are placed throughout the site.
