A six-storeyed house sits at the outskirts of the main town, that was built to become the prefect getaway for two sisters. Commissioned by Dr Pamu Choki Rairl, who intentioned for it to become a quiet space for herself and her sister, when she’d come visiting Sikkim from America, the place offers a panoramic view of farmlands and a peek into Sikkim’s rural wonder.
Connected to the main road, the brief was to transform an empty plot into a beautiful escape from the frenetic pace of the town. For this, we needed to work around the space constraints and the existing land slopes. To bring the perfect solution, the building is shaped along the contour of the site. The six floors are divided into two parts: three visible from the ground level and the rest three, tucked comfortably below ground level. The three floors on top have been designed to serve as a beautiful, private residence for the sisters. While the rest three are designed to become homestay units. The two sections have a ground floor entry at the centre that doubles up as the parking space.
The interiors of the private residence have been adorned with massive windows, an integrated double storeyed living area, lots of airy, bright, open spaces and a curving staircase that bridge all three floors.
Whereas the homestay below has been purposefully created to serve the guests with full-fledged units: with a kitchenette, spacious balconies and state-of-the-art bathrooms that go seamlessly with the rooms.Bringing two design purposes in one structure, both the styles have been configured to bring a sense of peace and luxury to those who reside there, even if only for a while.
